Moving from someWHAT to WHAT |
If you been using the someWHAT
demo version of WHAT and have then
purchased the full product, you have choices of how to make the
transition. You will get an e-mail message presenting you with an
authorization key which you will use when setting up the full version.
You should proceed following either one of the following possible
scenarios:
- If you have Internet access on your computer, we suggest you make
a completely fresh restart with WHAT. Otherwise, proceed to step 2.
Complete steps 1.A and then 1.B:
- Follow either one of the following two possible starting steps
(1.A.1 or 1.A.2):
- First get rid of the installed someWHAT on your computer by
removing WHAT. Left click the
Start button on your computer's
toolbar (usually at the lower left of your screen),
and then choose Settings and Control Panel.
In the Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
Left click the WHAT listing and then click the
Change/Remove button.
or
- Delete all files and folders in the WHAT program directory,
which by default is located at:
C:\Program Files\WHAT
- Web browse page:
http://wolfberg.net/what/purchase.
Near the beginning of that page, in the section entitled
"If You Have Already Purchased WHAT",
click on the Download
button. You will then be led through the steps of getting the
WHAT distribution and getting authorization to run it on your
computer. You will be all set with the fully functional
WHAT.
or
- If you do not have Internet access on your computer, or if you
choose not to use it, you can make changes to files you already have.
- Start up WHAT by double-clicking the icon on your desktop labelled
"WHAT using TWL98".
You will be shown a yellow dialog where you
may provide your authorization key. Do that, and follow
instructions. Eventually you will also get a password required to
complete your authorization to run WHAT on your computer. Once
you have completed that step, you are finished with authorization.
- You have more work to do to get WHAT's initialization files
changed so that it uses the full lexicons instead of the small
demo lexicons. These full lexicons are already on your computer,
since they came along with the someWHAT distribution, but you
need to alter WHAT's initialization files to have it use these
lexicons. There are two ways you can do this (the 2.B.1 series of steps
or the 2.B.2 series of steps). We recommend the
first way (the 2.B.1 series), especially since you may
want to customize other settings for other reasons as you become
more familiar with WHAT.
- Use these steps to have WHAT make new initialization files
for you:
- Start up WHAT using TWL98. You are warned that the
primary and secondary lexicons are not available.
This is not a problem. In the upper right part of
the WHAT window
select the Lexicons tab,
and then click on the Change Lexicon(s) button.
Notice TWL98 is already selected as the primary
lexicon. Select OWL2 as the secondary lexicon.
Click OK.
- Menu pick File->Make a New Initialization File...
A dialog comes up with many choices. In the first
column in the second last box labelled "Chosen
Lexicons and Secondary Lexicon Indicator" select
the second choice which is "Update with current
settings". Click OK, and you will be told you
have created a new
what.ini file.
- Start up WHAT using OWL2. You are warned that the
primary and secondary lexicons are not available.
This is not a problem. In the upper right part of
the WHAT window
select the Lexicons tab,
and then click on the Change Lexicon(s) button.
Change the primary lexicon to be OWL2 and the
secondary lexicon to be TWL98.
- In the upper box labelled "Identify Secondary Lexicon
Words with a Suffix Character" select the middle of the
three buttons instead of the already selected lower
button. Notice the chosen suffix character is a plus
sign, which we like, but you are welcome to use a different
character if you prefer. Click OK.
- Menu pick File->Make a New Initialization File...
A dialog comes up with many choices. In the first
column in the second last box labelled "Chosen Lexicons
and Secondary Lexicon Indicator" select the second
choice which is "Update with current settings".
Click OK, and you will be told you have created a new
what2.ini file.
- You are all done. The next time you run WHAT you
will be working with the correct lexicons.
or
- Use these steps to edit WHAT initialization files directly.
Use a text editing program of your choice, perhaps
Notepad, which comes with MS Windows.
- Edit initialization file
what.ini
in your WHAT
installation directory, which is by default:
C:\Program Files\WHAT
Change the fifth line from
5 11 0 *
to
1 9 0 *
- Edit initialization file
what2.ini
in your WHAT
installation directory, which is by default:
C:\Program Files\WHAT
Change the fifth line from
11 5 -1 *
to
9 1 -1 +
- You are all done. The next time you run WHAT you
will be working with the correct lexicons.
