up to the Massachusetts Scrabble® Clubs
This group, formerly known as the Massapoag Scrabble® Club, has been meeting at the Sharon Housing Authority clubhouse since June, 2004.
Attendance at this club has been low, so it may not meet at this location every week. It is essential that if you would like to attend that you call Wayne Yorra at 781-975-1190 (C) and speak with him.
This group is not a sanctioned club associated with the National Scrabble Association, but it does use the NSA Official Word List (OWL2). The group meets every Tuesday evening at the roomy and well-lit Sharon Housing Authority clubhouse at 18 Hixson Farm Rd. in Sharon, MA. Each evening session is from 6:00 to 10:30 p.m. or later. Of interest during the summer, the playing room is air-conditioned.
It does not matter when you arrive - players tend to play individual games and then seek a change of opponent. When there are an odd number of players, it is common that someone will play two different games simultaneously, so sitting out is uncommon. This club attracts players of all levels, from beginner to expert. There will be an attempt to match you against players at your playing level. Typical attendance used to be between 5-10 players, and there is plenty of room to accommodate many more; however, in 2007 attendance dropped off and many weeks saw only two players. At present, the club is not keeping game statistics.
The fee has been $2.50 per evening, with modest snacking refreshments provided. It is not clear if these snacks have continued or if this fee is still being requested. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome, preferably, but not necessarily, bringing deluxe sets and clocks. North American Scrabble® Club rules will be followed, but novices will be provided with special open-book word lists, a limited number of free challenges per game, and other aids.
The group may not meet on a holiday Tuesday or when the weather is really bad. Be sure to call Wayne Yorra at 781-975-1190 (C) when you would like to attend. For any other info about this group, please e-mail or call Ruth Weiner at 781-784-5205. You may also e-mail Laura Pearlstein.
Prior to June, 2004, meetings were held at the Sharon Community Center (to where it may return someday) and before that at the Barnes and Noble Book Store in Walpole.
The creator of this club, Paula Kaufmann, turned over the reins to Ruth Weiner and Laura Pearlstein in October, 2005. Subsequently, Wayne Yorra has been responsible for running the club.
You can view a map showing where the group meets.
Sharon Center can be reached off Route 1 or I-95 by way of Coney Street. It can also be reached off Route 1 by way of High Plain St. (Route 27), off I-95 by way of South Main St., or West from Canton, MA on Route 27.
If you are coming from the North, take Route 128 to I-95 South towards Providence, RI. Go only two exits from Route 128 to the Coney Street exit. At the end of the exit ramp, turn left. This will then merge with Route 27; continue to Sharon Center.
From Sharon Center, you will be taking "Route 27 South", but at this point in that route, it is actually heading northerly. Take Route 27 (also called N. Main St.) South, according to the signs, for 1.4 miles to Hixson Farm Rd. on the right. Turn right onto Hixson Farm Rd. Go a bit more than 1/10 mile to the first building on the left, which is 18 Hixson Farm Rd. The sign on the door reads: Sharon Housing Authority.
Parking is allowed at the side of the road, or in front of the building. Please do not park across the road in the indented parking area or in the residents lot.
