This amazing phony-free game was played at the Lexington, MA Scrabble Club #108 on October 7, 2004 between Steven Saul and Joel Horn. At that time, it set the club record for the highest loss, and with a total score of 1046, it was the runner-up highest total the club had ever seen.
In this game, the first five moves consisted of bingos, and the players went on to play three more (a total of four each), two of which were the final two plays. After four moves by both players, the score was 283-315.
The per-turn averages were: Joel 55.6 points and Steven 54.6 points. Of the 19 plays, 8 were bingos, which is 42.1%. Joel bingoed in 4 of his 9 turns, which is 44.4%.
According to Steve Alexander's FAQ, the highest losing score in North America is 539 by Joel Sherman in a California tourney in 2001. The highest total of 1111 was also set in 2001 in California (at a Los Angeles club) by Ira Cohen and Bruce d'Ambrosio, 653-458). Steve does not list the longest consecutive bingo count by two players, but the Lexington Club's Jere Mead holds the record of 5 by one player, set at the 1989 North American Championship.
